THE CURRENT

the student newspaper of Nova Southeastern University

Mission Statement

Fomerly the Knight, The Current represents the voice of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) student body and campus community. Our goal is to increase the awareness of issues that concern our readers through informative, balanced, and unbiased news coverage.

History

The Knight was established in 1989 under the directorship of Dr. Ben Mulvey. However, this newspaper was renamed to what is now The Current; the student newspaper for Nova Southeastern University. The former paper began as a monthly single sheet publication, which served the graduate student population. The staff complement was one. The first academic advisor was Dr. Christine Jackson.

During the early years, numerous presentation formats were attempted, which resulted in a 4-12 page newspaper. A manual production process was being used at this time whereby articles for the layout were pasted on the draft, which was subsequently collected by delivery persons and taken to press. The turnaround time for printing was a few weeks. An advisory committee was later formed which comprised members of the community and persons from NSU. Many discussions were held as the committee tried to determine the purpose, direction and future of the newspaper. It was decided that the paper’s purpose was to inform, educate, promote and, of course, generate an income. After about 5 years, the idea of a Business Manager evolved. The Business Manager’s responsibility was to secure advertisements for The Current and handle its finances. The position was created and filled; this was a success.

The Current has progressed through various stages of growth and development during its lifetime. Initially the newspaper was administered by the Department of Students Affairs, and later by the Department of Humanities. It was at first housed in the Academic Services Building, relocated to the Rosenthal Building, then back to Academic Services, and moved to its present home in the Athletics and Students Affairs Building in fall of 2004. At one stage it had even merged with the campus’ radio station. The newspaper is currently under the administration of the Department of Students Affairs, directed by the Dean, Dr. Brad Williams. Prof. Jennifer Reem is the academic advisor.

At the beginning of fall 2003 the Current had 2 employees on staff which later increased to six. Bi-monthly publications were then being produced. The newspaper now has 15 staff positions, with an Editor-in-Chief heading the production. Weekly publications of The Current began on Monday, September 13, 2004.
