Thanksgiving is traditionally a time to express gratitude to family, friends and loved ones who are close to our hearts. As an international student from Canada, this will be my first Thanksgiving in the U.S. It will be a time to reflect on the year and give thanks to those around me who have helped and supported me, whether it was late night study sessions, being my designated driver for a party or to encouraged me to pursue my dreams.

Although I look forward to the Thanksgiving Day feast and the Black Friday sales, I thought to myself, "What am I thankful for?" My list ranged from being alive, to pursuing my M.B.A., to being able to voice my opinion to the NSU community.

The concept of Thanksgiving made me think that we all have things and people in life we are thankful for but there are people down on their luck who we can help as well. As the holiday season descends upon us, it is important to remember and help those who are not as fortunate as us, yet there is a responsibility with giving back.

Mother Teresa once said, "There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread, but there are many more dying for a little love." Doing a good deed this Thanksgiving does not require every individual to help out at a soup kitchen, a shelter or even donate money. Your contribution is unique to yourself. Find a local charity or cause that means something to you and donate your time and attention. Remember that student at school who will not be going home for the Thanksgiving holiday and invite them over for dinner. Connect with those around you and have a happy Thanksgiving!
